Whatever happened to the woman who slept on the table?

I walked into a classroom one morning during my sophomore year of college to find a woman sleeping on a table.

She was maybe 40, and she had only a canvas bag with her. It served as her pillow, and it almost certainly also held the only possessions she owned.

I was too naive to realize she was homeless, and I was too stunned to do anything more than watch her abruptly walk out without saying a word to me.

Fast forward more than 30 years and you’ll find I wonder each time I walk into a classroom whatever happened to that woman.

I don’t recall ever seeing her again, but those five or so seconds we were together have never been forgotten.

Did she find other buildings on campus where she could rest? Did she eventually find a place she could call home? Why was she homeless?

How much different my response to her would be today.
