California State University system new graduation requirement: ethnic studies or social justice class

The California State University system has made a significant change to its graduation requirements by adding a required course in ethnic studies or social justice.

The Los Angeles Times notes

The board of trustees voted in favor of the requirement, which will take effect starting in 2023 in the nation’s largest four-year public university system. …

Two questions dominated their debate: How should ethnic studies be defined? And who gets to decide: faculty, trustees or state lawmakers?

I’ll let others tackle the first question, but I’ll provide the correct answer to the second one: faculty.

It is the faculty who will have the teaching and research experience that will allow for the right curriculum decisions to be made. Saying that, I fear it will be lawmakers who will demand the decision-making power.
